چکیده

Using microfabricated break junctions, we have produced Al and Au contacts consisting of a small number of atoms. These metallic quantum point contacts accomodate a small number of conduction channels. We have determined the individual transmission coefficients in contacts containing up to six conduction channels. The determination is based on a comparison of the highly nonlinear current–voltage characteristics in the superconducting state with the predictions of the theory for a single channel superconducting contact (in the case of Au contacts superconductivity is induced by means of the proximity effect). We find that in the smallest achievable contacts usually three channels contribute to the transport in the case of Al, whereas only one does in the case of Au. These findings are consistent with the quantum chemistry point of view that the channels are determined by the valence atomic orbitals at the narrowest section of the contacts. c © 1998 Academic Press Limited

Landauer Formula without Landauer’s Assumptions

The Landauer formula for dissipationless conductance lies at the heart of modern electronic transport, yet it remains without a clear microscopic basis. We analyze the Landauer formula microscopically, and give a straightforward quantum kinetic derivation for open systems. Some important experimental implications follow. These lie beyond the Landauer result as popularly received. In 1957 Rolf L...

Conduction Channel Transmissions of Atomic-Size Aluminum Contacts

Metallic properties of magnesium point contacts

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the conductance and stability of Mg atomic-sized contacts. Using mechanically controllable break junctions (MCBJ), we observed that the room temperature conductance histograms exhibit a series of peaks, which suggests the existence of a shell effect. Its periodicity, however, cannot be simply explained in terms of either an atomic or electroni...

Quantized Evolution of the Plasmonic Response in a Stretched Nanorod.

Quantum aspects, such as electron tunneling between closely separated metallic nanoparticles, are crucial for understanding the plasmonic response of nanoscale systems. We explore quantum effects on the response of the conductively coupled metallic nanoparticle dimer. This is realized by stretching a nanorod, which leads to the formation of a narrowing atomic contact between the two nanorod end...

Andreev scattering in nanoscopic junctions in a magnetic field

– We report on the measurement of multiple Andreev resonances at atomic size point contacts between two superconducting nanostructures of Pb under magnetic fields higher than the bulk critical field, where superconductivity is restricted to a mesoscopic region near the contact. The small number of conduction channels in this type of contacts permits a quantitative comparison with theory through...
